In a unique audio presentation, Bernard
Poirette, one of France’s best-known radio journalists,
sits down with three prominent French opinion leaders to discuss
aspects of the French-American relationship.
Philippe Roger, author of The American Enemy: A Genealogy
of Anti-Americanism in France, traces the roots of anti-American
sentiment from the French Revolution, when the United States
declined to help French republicans overthrow the monarchy,
through several dustups in the 20th century, and ultimately
to the recent war of words over Iraq.
Then antiglobalization activist Bernard
Cassen takes his turn, accusing the United States of using
political and economic “imperialism” to advance
its global ambitions at the expense of the rest of the world.
Finally, center-right parliamentarian Pierre
Lellouche explains what he thinks happened in the run-up to
the Iraq war to set Washington and Paris on a collision course,
why he thinks French president Jacques Chirac miscalculated,
and why he believes the rift must be mended.
Recorded entirely in French, the 70-minute
audio program (on CD) is accompanied by a French transcript
and parallel English translation. In addition, scores of notes
provide essential background information on people and events
cited by the speakers, as well as clarification of some of
their comments and claims.
